Message from Head of School

Dear Parents,

Before I start with wishing you a wonderful holiday and a very Happy New Year, I would like to share with you some of the discussions and conversations that are happening at SSIS in preparation for the next few years.

SSIS has so much to offer our children and we want to continue to add to those strengths. The school will reach its 25th anniversary next year and we owe it to our students and to the next generation of students to continue moving forward.

SSIS is a great school and we want to be an exceptional school. There are many ways to become exceptional, and for us at SSIS, our conversations are focusing on how to get better at ensuring that ALL of our children are successful, knowing that, all children are different and that we all learn differently. This is a great challenge. Our discussions are revolving around ways to become more inclusive and offer differentiated instruction, two areas that the school has always prided itself on and will continue to focus on improving. In addition, we are looking at our numeracy and literacy programs to ensure that we continue to offer a rigorous and  challenging program. I hope for all of our sakes and for the sake of our children that we never reach the point where we think we no longer need to improve.

Through our discussions, we are looking at our mission, vision, and values; a discussion that will soon also involve our parent and student communities. We are also considering creating our own Definition of Learning to be clear on what learning means for us here at SSIS and what kind of learning experiences we want for our children.

On a last note, I am sending a reminder of how grateful I am personally to be in a school where the doors are open for children to attend school and activities in person, which is very special for many of us who are away from our families. I say this in the light of the new travel restrictions. Many of our colleagues around the world are back to working in schools in the virtual world. While that would not be our first choice, we are ready if we have to move to remote learning, since our priority is for our community and our city to be safe. Please be safe and be careful. Before our return to school, you will receive another survey from us that is a requirement from the government to self-declare your travels during the holiday. We ask that EVERYONE must fill the survey. There are no exceptions. Whether you travelled or not you must fill the survey. We ask for your help and assistance as we will not be able to allow students to be in classes if the survey is not filled. The survey is planned to come out around Friday the 19th, so please keep an eye out for the survey.  We will also send you a notification reminder.

We thank you again for your trust in us and wish you all a wonderful, safe, and  very happy Chinese New Year.

Welcome to the Year of the Ox,
