Happy 25th Birthday SSIS!

On November 23, SSIS launched its 25th anniversary celebration, marking the beginning of a series of events to celebrate the 25th birthday of SSIS.

Rising Stars - Elementary Talent Show

Each child did an amazing job and really had the chance to shine. The audience was supportive and enthusiastic, all making for two fabulous shows. Performing on the stage is so different to the classroom setting and it takes courage to step out in front of your classmates.  We were so proud of each performer, they really gave their best.

We Run for a Cause: Active for Action

On Thursday 11 November, SSIS Service Committee hosted the annual Active for Action event on the school track. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, parents and families were all actively involved in a fun run or walk to raise funds to support SSIS student service groups in both Elementary and Secondary.

ACAMIS Volleyball Tournament Underway

As a member of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), SSIS is hosting the 2021 Acamis Volleyball Tournament from Nov 4 to Nov 6.

SAVP Asian Dinner

The South Africa Vastfontein Project (SAVP) service group held the Asian Dinner on October 28th. We raise funds each year to support the South Africa Vastfontein Orphanage in Cape Town—this is the 11th year that we’ve been working with them.

Learning Showcase: Grade 6 Individuals & Societies

During September and October, Grade 6 Individuals and Societies students embark on a digital documentary as part of their first unit; "My History". The Statement of Inquiry for this unit is "The time, place and space of my ancestors influence my cultural and personal identity".

Virtual Meet & Greet Series: Bath/Exeter/York University

Next week, we are going to meet more university admission representatives from Bath University, Exeter University and York University.

All of the virtual events will feature live interaction with representatives from participating universities, for students to ask questions, collect information and be connected.

Spooky and SWEET Halloween

On October 29th, our wonderful PSP group prepared sweet treats for all students in school from Early Years to High School. More than 20 PSP parents came to school and help packing individual goody bags for each homeroom, making sure all of our students are receiving this nice little gift!

Grade 5 and 3 Collaboration

Last Wednesday the grade 5 students worked in their Learning PODs to showcase their collaborative inquiry challenges, which celebrated their learning within the Who We Are unit of inquiry. They presented these to their grade 3 buddy students.

SSIS Students Raise Money for Children with Congenital Heart Disease

SSIS Heart to Heart students with the support of the SSIS service committee made the donation of RMB60,000 to fund surgery and treatment for two children from Guizhou province, who were born with congenital heart disease. With the donation, both children were able to have open heart surgery in Shanghai on September 7th this year.

Suzhou Heritage Trip

On September 26th the members of Suzhou Heritage took the teachers on a trip to Panmen. A total of 33 people went to the trip making this trip the biggest one in the past few years for our service group.

SSIS College Counsellors Encourage Students to "Reach for the Stars!"

The college application process can be anxiety-inducing at times, but it also presents a wonderful opportunity for students to explore their own strengths and even achieve outcomes that are beyond their own expectations! Indeed, one of the key themes and refrains oft-repeated within the College Counselling Department this year is for students to "Reach for the stars!"

Middle School New Student Welcome Brunch

We are excited to welcome over 50 new SSIS students into grades 6 through 8 thus far this year. SSIS is full of wonderful students, and we know that it can be exciting and also challenging to start at a new school. So our Middle School Student Council worked with our Student Ambassadors Service Group and our Canteen vendors to put on a New Student Welcome Brunch.

SSIS Welcome New Parents to Join the Community

This week, SSIS PSP group (Parent School Partnership) has held a welcome event to welcome parents who are new to our community. With more than 100 new parents, members of PSP, school leadership to attend, it was a great way for new families to get acquainted with the school community and make connections.

Celebrating 25 Years of Education Excellence

This Year, SSIS celebrates the 25th anniversary of providing excellent international education to expatriate families in Suzhou since our founding in the year of 1996.

To kick off the anniversary celebration, SSIS is proud to release its 25th anniversary logo.

Grade 5 Laptop Launch day

Tuesday 14th September sees the G5 Laptop Launch day. Parents and students gather in the theatre for a short presentation regarding safe and responsible use of the devices, both at school and at home.

Messy Play and Counselling

Our Messy Play program started a number of years ago, based on research which associates opportunities to engage in messy play as necessary in the development of healthy children. Through engaging in a variety of sensory experiences, whether the medium is water, sand, glue, mud, glitter, slime, stones or fabric students develop a healthy disposition for learning and a sense of curiosity about the world.

16 Service Groups Recruiting New Members at SSIS Service Expo

A new school year is underway at SSIS and with the start of our ECP program comes the annual SSIS Service Expo on Wednesday, September 8th. This event gives our school service groups, in which there are 16 in total an opportunity to display to the student body and community what their purpose and mission are and look to actively recruit new students to their groups who are interested.

Exciting Curriculum Development to Support Rigor Needed for SSIS Learners

As of August 2021, SSIS would proudly present a clear academic program in the areas of Mathematics and Literacy. Students will be engaged in and interacting with Reveal math and Readers and Writers workshop style in class. All the new developments will bring a higher level of differentiation and inclusion into the classes. It will allow teachers to focus on the individual needs of each student.

Congratulations to our SSIS Community on outstanding IB Diploma results

It is with great pleasure that we share with you this year's IB Diploma results. The numbers really speak for themselves. When we have a 100% success rate with all of our students receiving the full diploma, with over 48% of the students achieving 40 points and above, there is very little we can say other than congratulations on an amazing success.

MYP Celebration Ceremony

Wednesday saw the Grade 10 students involved in their MYP Celebration day, followed by the MYP Celebration Ceremony. This event signifies the completion of the Middle Years Programme and celebrates the achievements of all students during the five years of the programme.

Grade 5 Moving Up Ceremony

On Thursday 17 June, the Grade 5 students and their families celebrated their Moving Up event. This celebration was an opportunity for the Grade 5 learning community to recognise our Grade 5 students' achievements in completing their International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Program.

Grade 3 Science Fair

This week, Grade 3 hosted the 'How the World Works' Science Fair. The main ideas from this 6-week unit were to explore the different states of matter (solids, liquids and gasses) and how they can change.

Happy Graduation!

We were proud to honor the Class of 2021 at this year's Graduation Ceremony. The Class of 2021 has been through a tumultuous and momentous year, but through it all they kept learning and growing.

Grade 5 Installation Artwork

97 Grade 5 students have worked together to design and create an installation artwork on the walls in Mr Johnson, the elementary principal's office.

Grade 5 PYP Exhibition

This week the grade 5 learning community celebrated the completion of their Primary Years Program Exhibition (PYPX). The PYPX is a culminating inquiry experience in which the students become an expert at a chosen local and or global issue.

Elementary Sports Day

The coordination of this event is a testament to how well our school community of teachers, parents, and students work together.

Grade 2 Market Day

For the fifth unit of inquiry, "How We Organize Ourselves", Grade 2 put on their thinking caps and learned about how businesses operate in order to support their communities!

MYP Personal Project Exhibition

SSIS grade 10 students were able to present their final products to the school community last week at the Personal Project exhibition. The Personal Project is a major investigation and creation of a learning event for the students.

Grade 9 Cheerleading

This year marks the 5th year of Grade 9 Cheerleading and our 3rd year of performing for the parent audience. Cheerleading is a great unit which encourages the teams of 6 to collaborate and develop good practice and planning methods to allow them to choreograph the "aesthetically pleasing" performances that we saw on Monday afternoon.

Secondary Academic Awards

This week at both the Junior and Senior Secondary assemblies, I was honoured to present the students who received Principal's awards for Semester 1 their certificates on the stage. It was great to have the opportunity to celebrate the hard work and commitment of these dedicated students.

Pi Week Activities at SSIS

All students have done a great job this year, further developing their leadership and creative skills, and demonstrating they are great mathematicians, communicators, principled and knowledgeable students. Happy Pi day!

Design Expo 2021

The students of Design at SSIS have been very proactive and busy this first semester preparing artifacts and visuals of their current Semester one projects. The work, currently on display in the SSIS Lobby, is a collective snapshot of learning across all MYP and DP courses.

Sherlock and Cinders - the largest elementary cast in history

Everybody knows the story of Cinderella. But did you know that the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes was actually the mastermind in helping the prince locate his princess? This week, SSIS elementary students performed a new version of the famous tale.

Class of 2021 Early University Acceptances Update

The SSIS College Counselling Department is delighted to announce that the Class of 2021 are already demonstrating impressive outcomes from the round of early university applications they submitted this fall. As of mid-January, 2021's graduates have secured a total of 35 university acceptances.

Grade 2 Science Fair – How the World Works

Grade 2 have been working hard. Within class time they have been learning all about Procedural texts which has led directly into our science unit and how to write a scientific procedure.

Football for Humanity

This year the SSIS Habitat for Humanity Club continued their tradition of "Football for Humanity". We have hosted this event for over 7 years, and we had a great turnout. Six teams played and games were friendly, yet competitive.

SSIS Secondary Production

Over the last three months our SSIS secondary students have been busy preparing for the opening of the musical. The time has finally come for them to present 'The Addams Family Musical'. The cast consists of 87 students from Grade 6-12 and staff, including performers, crew, orchestra, student assistant directors and the director.
