Good Things Coming in Semester 2
It will soon be time to celebrate Chinese New Year and with it the beginning of the Second Semester. We have been working hard on a number of exciting and important Second Semester initiatives that will support Elementary students and families:
Semester 2 Schedule Update
At SSIS, we offer students a balanced learning experience that allows them to grow in a healthy way. Recent changes have impacted our ability to provide regular PE, Visual Arts, and Music classes for students in Grades 1-5. We are excited to announce that, beginning after the Chinese New Year for our students in Grades 1-5 we will provide:
- Weekly Visual Arts classes (rather than every other week)
- Weekly Music classes (rather than every other week)
- 3 PE classes per week (rather than once per week)
- Consistent times every day for Math and Literacy instruction
Your child's homeroom teacher will share the exact schedule with you, including when your child will have PE and need to come to school in the PE uniform.
Strong Numeracy and Literacy Skills
Beginning in the Second Semester, teams of Elementary and Secondary teachers will be reviewing our current practices and future options around the teaching of Numeracy and Literacy, with the goal of implementing a strong, vertically-aligned approach. These conversations and initiatives will support solid student learning for years to come. Please stay tuned for Parent Workshop invitations in the future so we can share our conclusions and next steps with you.
Keeping Students Safe While Online
The internet can be a confusing place for curious children. While teachers are able to monitor much of the internet use during school hours, it’s only through school-appropriate software that we can feel the most secure that students are not viewing inappropriate content. We are happy to share with you that we will be taking the steps of further strengthening our system by implementing a web filter to ensure that our children’s internet experiences are as positive as possible. It takes a village to raise a child, but it doesn’t hurt to also have the right software in place!
Semester 1 Report Cards Available on February 5
Report will be available as of 9:00 am on Friday, February 5th via PowerSchool. Please contact ES Secretary Grace Gao (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have any difficulty logging-in to PowerSchool. Take the time to read the teachers’ comments. Although grades are easy to access and give a quick overview, you will find that the comments outline the details of what has been learned, your child’s strengths, and goals that your child will be working towards in future.
Please remember that the report card is one of several ways through which we can share information about your child’s learning. Other ways include portfolios, See Saw, blogs, conferences, emails and personal meetings. We hope that, together, all these methods will give you a wide and thorough insight to your child’s achievements.
We hope you have a safe and restful Chinese New Year, knowing that we will be helping your child to be even more active, smarter, and safer in Semester 2.
