Activities

The Boai Project at SSIS supports the Suzhou Industrial Park Boai Charity School. The school was launched in 1998 and provides support, treatment and education for children with physical illness, mental illness and special educational needs. Students involved will visit Boai School regularly, planning various activities and games to help the children be more active.

First Love is a dedicated organization focused on supporting the Ati tribe in Boracay, Philippines.  First love focuses on raising funds to send to the school which the Ati tribe attends. Additionally, we facilitate a yearly trip where students can bond with the Ati children, aid in construction, and offer tutoring. By prioritizing education and community development, we aim to empower the Ati tribe's children and foster a brighter future for their community.

Heart to Heart Shanghai will help children with congenital heart defects by paying part of/all of the medical fee of one child's surgery. Product drives such as collecting donated books and toiletries are used for fundraising and to assist the families and patients of Heart To Heart Shanghai. There are opportunities, throughout the year, for students to travel to Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital in Puxi, Shanghai to volunteer their time, deliver donated goods and visit the family and child that they have sponsored. This activity is for senior secondary students and is a yearlong commitment including participation in the annual Charity Concert and the SSIS Triathlon.

For each visit to a retirement home in Suzhou, students plan activities whereby they can involve as many senior residents as possible. Residents speak Mandarin Chinese, but some residents only speak the local dialect, so non-language dependent activities are also encouraged. Students will need to show a commitment to planning activities that require sensitivity to working with elderly people from another culture and with language barriers for many. This service activity is for our senior secondary students and is a yearlong commitment.

Middle School Student Council is a place to listen to and share student voices, and is a chance for students to make an important contribution to the SSIS Middle School. Students build school spirit by organizing fun events that unite the school community. Through service projects, they positively impact both the school and local community. MS Student Council fosters leadership skills, service and helps to create a vibrant and inclusive school environment!

The vision of the Kids4Environment is to create a lasting change among people, animals and plants in the environment. Students involved are creating awareness in the school and local community by promoting the benefits of a waste free lifestyle through school events and projects in and outside of school. Kids4Environment are also developing a functioning herb and vegetable garden with compost and a greenhouse. Their aim this year is for the garden to be used as a community space by all school members.

The Million Tree Project aims to raise community awareness of the Earth’s precious environment while focusing on steps individuals can take to lessen their negative impact on the natural world. An opportunity to travel (at the student’s expense and must be 16 years or older) to Inner Mongolia exists in April. This service experience is open to senior secondary students and is a yearlong commitment.

Paws4Cause has the mission to address the problems with large numbers of stray cats and dogs in Suzhou, along with regular visits to a local animal shelter allowing for direct service opportunities. Students participating in this activity will be required to work collaboratively and solve problems in a team. Paws4Cause will make direct service a focus with visits to a local animal shelter. This service experience is open to grade 9-12 students and is a yearlong commitment including the Annual Blanket Drive and the Annual Photography Competition.

Student Ambassadors work at important SSIS events to help and assist with various individuals within and outside the school community. Student Ambassadors develop and showcase their leadership skills by working at SSIS's major events including, but not exclusive to: SSIS' Annual University Fair; university visits throughout the year; Suzhou Amazing Race; Thanksgiving Dinner; Christmas Market; International Family Day; the Grade 12 Leavers' Assembly; and the Grade 12 Grad Ceremony.

Students in Suzhou Heritage will initially help with the quality of English spoken at the gardens in Suzhou with a view to attracting more foreign visitors. After that, they will do the same service for other places of historical interest.

The Dawn Project is an interactive music focused service experience. SSIS Senior Secondary students teach younger children, in a series of music activities and group guitar teaching.

Tang Mama is a local charity organization which supports a variety of areas. Fundraising for lifesaver jerrycans which help produce clean drinking water for rural Gansu as well as working with people of various backgrounds in the market place. Students will support by creating fundraising opportunities as well as providing direct service by attending events and volunteering at the charity shop in SIP.

Victory Foundation is a service group committed to making a positive impact on underprivileged communities in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. With a strong focus on education, this charity raises funds and directly supports schools in the region. Additionally, Victory Foundation creates educational content and provides online video tutoring to enhance the learning experience for the students. Victory Foundation prides itself in being the only service group to offer aid to a location outside of South-East Asia, and provides numerous opportunities to students in SSIS to create, problem solve, and connect students from across the world.

The Wishing Well project is a student-led service group aimed towards supporting the terminally-ill children in the local Children's Hospital of Soochow University. Each year we look to support around 20 children who student participants will have a chance at meeting and get to know them better. These children may write up to 5 wishes to make up their “wish-list”, which our service group will then collectively go through case by case to select the most gratifying wishes for each child. We will then be fulfilling the wishes through our visits in the span of a school year.

WISTEM is a group who focus on researching and conducting presentations in the STEM related fields. They explore topics of interest and share with the group and wider community.

MS Paws 4 Cause is a group who look to support the local animal shelter in Suzhou called SAPA. They will look to organize visits to directly help the shelter and care for the animals housed there. They will also look to raise awareness within the community of how others can get involved and look to help the stray animals within Suzhou.
